The North American paper market is heading into the fall with an interesting challenge. While demand patterns continue to evolve across many print segments, paper pricing and availability haven’t necessarily become easier for print buyers to navigate.

(AF&PA), U.S. printing and writing paper shipments in July, while inventories increased 3% from June. Major categories reported reduced shipments, although coated freesheet remained one of the stronger-performing grades with a 6% decrease.

Shipment data remains an important metric for understanding paper market conditions and is widely referenced throughout the printing industry. However, shipments represent only one part of the picture. Capacity reductions, mill conversions, operating rates, trade policies and supply chain shifts all play a significant role in determining paper availability and pricing.

In many industries, lower demand would normally lead to lower prices. In the paper industry, however, the story is more complicated. Capacity reductions, mill conversions, trade policies and shifting supply chains continue to reshape the market.

Supply Is Changing

Printing and writing paper markets continue to evolve as customer needs, media consumption habits and product mix shift over time. According to the American Forest & Paper Association, printing-writing capacity has declined over the past decade as paper producers have adjusted operations to align with changing market conditions.

Some mills have closed, while others have converted machines to produce packaging grades instead of printing papers. In fact, AF&PA reports that U.S. printing-writing capacity fell 13.9% in 2025 alone, even as operating rates improved from 76.8% to 82.8%.

Because production capacity has been reduced in step with changing market conditions, certain paper grades continue to operate at relatively healthy utilization rates. As a result, pricing has remained more stable than many buyers might expect.

In short, reduced demand does not automatically translate into lower paper costs when production capacity is also being reduced.

Tariffs Are Creating New Uncertainty

Trade policy has become one of the biggest wild cards for the paper industry in 2026. A . Brazil is an important supplier of certain paper products used in the North American market, and these tariffs have the potential to tighten supply and increase costs.

At the same time, . While the impact varies by product category, some paper and printing-related materials fall within the scope of these actions.

Because Canada remains one of the largest suppliers of paper products to the United States, even targeted tariffs can create uncertainty throughout the supply chain.

For print buyers, these developments highlight the importance of planning ahead and maintaining flexibility when selecting paper grades and specifications.

Mill Conversions Continue to Reduce Printing Paper Capacity

Another factor affecting the market is the ongoing conversion of paper machines to packaging production. One notable example is of its Riverdale mill machine from uncoated freesheet production to containerboard production.

Moves like this are becoming increasingly common across the industry. As packaging markets continue to expand, some manufacturers are reallocating resources toward containerboard and other packaging grades.

International Paper also completed its , further supporting its packaging business and expanding production capabilities.

These changes reinforce a longer-term industry trend: available printing paper production capacity continues to contract even as the market adjusts to changing demand patterns. That dynamic can keep certain grades relatively tight and help support prices.

Print Buyers Are Adapting

Print buyers continue to adjust their purchasing habits in response to economic pressures and rising costs.

According to a , nearly 59% of print providers said customers are reducing print usage because of rising costs, including postage, labor and tariffs. More than half reported that customers are seeking additional guidance when planning projects.

At the same time, buyers are shortening lead times, requesting faster turnarounds and becoming more budget conscious.

This creates an opportunity for printers to provide strategic guidance rather than simply fulfill orders. Paper selection, format changes, page counts, quantities and distribution strategies can all influence overall project costs and return on investment.

Postal Changes Add Another Variable

Paper costs are only one part of the equation. USPS implemented new market-dominant prices and mailing standards on July 12, introducing several changes that can affect direct mail programs, catalogs and periodicals.

Adjustments to Periodicals pricing, entry requirements and weight thresholds may influence decisions about format, mailing strategy and production specifications. For organizations that rely heavily on mailed communications, postal planning and paper planning increasingly need to happen together.

What Print Buyers Should Do Next

The biggest lesson from today’s paper market is simple: don’t assume changing demand patterns will automatically lead to lower costs or easier sourcing.

Successful print programs in today’s environment require:

  • Planning projects earlier
  • Reviewing paper alternatives before production begins
  • Monitoring potential tariff impacts
  • Coordinating mailing and production decisions

Factors such as page count, basis weight, quantities, format and mailing strategy can have a significant impact on the overall cost and effectiveness of a print project. As supply chains continue to evolve, proactive planning remains the best way to avoid unexpected cost increases, paper substitutions and production delays.

Ƶ is proud to celebrate a major milestone for our customer, , whose debut title Austin’s Music Scene: Your Guide to the City’s Most Iconic Artists & Venues has earned national recognition at the 2026 IBPA Book Awards.

The book received top honors across multiple categories:

  • Gold Winner – Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book: Nonfiction
  • Gold Winner – Gift Book
  • Silver Winner – Cover Design: Nonfiction

Presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association, the IBPA Book Awards represent one of the highest distinctions in independent publishing – recognizing excellence in storytelling, design, and production.

A First-Time Publisher with a Big Vision

Published in November 2025, Austin’s Music Scene is a 224-page, photo-rich celebration of the city’s contemporary music culture. More than a book, it’s a curated experience – part visual showcase, part insider guide – featuring:

  • 160+ artist profiles spanning genres
  • Venue histories and festival coverage
  • Curated playlists and local perspectives
  • A hand-drawn map of Austin’s live music scene

But what truly elevates the project is its purpose. Half of all net proceeds support the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), directly benefiting the creative community that inspired its pages. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) works to provide access to affordable healthcare and support services for low-income working musicians in the Austin community.

For founder and editor-in-chief Mitch Baranowski, this wasn’t just a publishing project – it was personal.

“Ƶ was a true partner from the very first bid conversation all the way through final delivery,” said Mitch Baranowski, founder and editor-in-chief of Thunderhouse Media. “The close coordination at every stage of the project gave us the confidence to push the design as far as we did. When you’re a first-time publisher putting everything into a book like this — the photography, the stories, the cause behind it — you need a printer who’s as invested in the outcome as you are. Ƶ was exactly that. It’s the kind of project that reminds you why print still matters.”

It’s a source of pride for Ƶ, as well. This is what “customer-centric partnership” really looks like – deep alignment, shared accountability and enabling the customer to take creative risks that ultimately drive a book everyone wants and award-winning outcomes.

From Vision to Press Check: Bringing the Book to Life

Producing a design-driven, photography-heavy book at this level requires more than strong files – it takes precision, collaboration and hands-on expertise.

The Thunderhouse team traveled to Ƶ’s Marceline facility for an on-site press check, seeing their vision come to life in real time.

As Rich Zweiback, the sales representative who worked alongside Baranowski on this project, shared:

“It was a blast working on this project. Our team at Ƶ was able to home in on our customer’s goals and produce an award-winning book. An on-site press check brought them to Marceline where they were treated to a hands-on course in book production.”

A Blueprint for What’s Possible in Print

Projects like Austin’s Music Scene demonstrate what happens when creative ambition is matched with production expertise. The result isn’t just a book – it’s:

  • A brand-building asset for a first-time publisher
  • A revenue-generating product tied to a meaningful cause
  • A showcase of what high-end print can achieve when done right

This project is a strong proof point: when we collaborate early and often, focus on outcomes and not just output, we create work that stands out in the market.

Looking Ahead

As the IBPA Book Awards continue to spotlight the best in independent publishing, Austin’s Music Scene sets a clear benchmark for what’s possible.

Ƶ is proud to support customers who are pushing boundaries, telling important stories and using print as a platform for impact.

The United States Postal Service has filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) for a temporary price adjustment affecting select competitive shipping services.

The change introduces an 8% fuel surcharge on competitive products, driven by rising transportation and fuel costs. This is the first time USPS has ever implemented a fuel-related surcharge of this kind.

The surcharge is scheduled to take effect April 26, 2026 and remain in place through Jan. 17, 2027. The impacted services include:

  • Priority Mail Express
  • Priority Mail
  • USPS Ground Advantage
  • Parcel Select

Importantly, this adjustment does not apply to market-dominant mail categories. First-Class Mail, Periodicals, Marketing Mail and Bound Printed Matter are not affected. The PRC will review the proposed price change before it is scheduled to take effect on April 26. You can see complete USPS price filings on the PRC website at .

For mailers and print buyers, this change primarily impacts package shipping costs rather than traditional mail programs. However, organizations that rely on USPS for print distribution through competitive services should plan for increased postage expenses during this period.

As always, staying informed on postal changes helps ensure accurate budgeting and efficient mailing strategies. To continue receiving updates from Ƶ’s mailing experts, please subscribe to our blog or get in touch with us today.

The U.S. Postal Service is once again facing significant financial headwinds, with leadership warning that the agency could run out of cash within the next year without Congressional action. In recent testimony, Postmaster General David Steiner indicated the Postal Service may be unable to sustain operations under current conditions, citing ongoing losses, declining mail volume and structural financial constraints.

According to , the agency is projected to exhaust its cash reserves in less than 12 months if no changes are made. This situation is driven in part by continued declines in First-Class Mail, historically the Postal Service’s most profitable product, along with regulatory and legislative requirements that limit financial flexibility.

Additional reporting highlights the urgency of the situation. A notes that without reforms, the Postal Service may not be able to maintain current service levels. Proposed solutions include increasing borrowing authority, adjusting postage rates and implementing operational changes to stabilize finances. Representatives from the U.S. Postal Service met with members of congress on March 17 to , but as of now, no changes have been made.

For publishers and businesses in the print and mailing industry, it’s important to stay informed and adaptable. Potential rate increases and service adjustments could impact mailing strategies, production schedules and overall campaign planning. As policymakers weigh their next steps, the industry will be watching closely for decisions that shape the future of mail.

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin; March 16, 2026 – Ƶ is pleased to announce the promotion of Jeremy Stanek to General Manager of Ƶ – Eau Claire, following the announcement of Dan Kelm’s upcoming retirement in June.

Stanek brings nearly 25 years of experience at the Eau Claire plant to his new role. He began his career as a second shift press operator at Documation (now Ƶ – Eau Claire), and steadily advanced through positions of increasing responsibility. As General Manager, Stanek will focus on strengthening overall plant performance, supporting continued growth and aligning the facility with Ƶ’s broader commercial strategy.

One of Stanek’s top priorities will be working closely with the sales team to onboard new customers and expand opportunities that build long-term partnerships. With a strong focus on service and support, he is committed to finding new and innovative ways to improve efficiency and better serve our customers.

“My primary goal is to help us reach our full potential as a plant,” Stanek said. “When we grow our sales and operate at strong, consistent volume levels, it creates positive momentum across the entire organization.”

Stanek is equally focused on investing in the people who power the Eau Claire location. He aims to foster a culture of problem solving and continuous improvement, encouraging employees at every level to take ownership and grow in their roles.

“I want to see our team members succeed both personally and professionally,” Stanek said. “I don’t want people to be afraid to try new things or make decisions. Mistakes are learning opportunities. That’s how individuals grow and how organizations get better.”

Although his promotion brings greater responsibility, Stanek’s leadership style will remain consistent. He describes himself as analytical and people focused, with a servant-leader mindset that prioritizes empowering others.

“Any employee who works hard, takes on challenges and is willing to solve problems can grow here,” Stanek said. “I’m grateful for the opportunities I was given early in my career, and I want to continue that tradition of developing leaders from within.”

Stanek’s promotion marks a new chapter for Ƶ – Eau Claire, and reinforces Ƶ’s commitment to its company vision: amazing people delivering the best print experiences.

This year, Ƶ turns 89. That number carries weight, not just because of its size, but because of everything behind it – nearly nine decades of craftsmanship, commitment and partnerships built on trust.

From the start, Ƶ has been shaped by people who cared deeply about what they were making and who they were making it for. That mindset is the reason we are still here today, serving customers, expanding our capabilities and taking pride in every finished piece that leaves our facilities.

As President Don Ƶ said, “Eighty-nine years doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when generations of people show up every day and take pride in their work. It’s the people who make the difference – they’ve always been the heart of Ƶ.”

Built on Craft and Built to Last

Print has changed drastically over the years, but the purpose behind our work has stayed the same. We help schools preserve memories that matter. We help publishers share stories that deserve to be seen and held. We help brands connect with their audiences through quality magazines and catalogs that feel intentional and lasting.

That kind of work demands care. It requires deep knowledge of quality printing, expert color replication, thoughtful pre-press processes and an understanding that quality is never optional. Most importantly, it requires the right people.

Our team members are the reason Ƶ has earned its reputation. From the pressroom to customer support to the teams behind the scenes solving problems before they even happen, that pride shows up every day. Customers notice it. They feel it. And it’s why so many of them have trusted us for years, even decades.

A Family Company, Still Family-Led

Ƶ remains family-owned and family-led, now spanning the second and third generations of the Ƶ family. With Tripp Ƶ representing the fourth generation, that legacy continues to grow.

That continuity matters. It shows up in how decisions are made and in the long-term view we take with our customers and our team. We do not chase shortcuts – we invest carefully and with purpose. We protect the reputation built over nearly nine decades because it was earned one job at a time.

Where We Are Today

Today, Ƶ operates eight locations, including five state-of-the-art printing facilities, with more than 1,500 employees producing books, magazines, catalogs and yearbooks for our customers across the country.

Growth for us has never been just about scale. It’s about capability and consistency. It’s about being reliable, responsive and continually improving the experience we deliver. “Our philosophy is clear in every acquisition, every new capability or new piece of equipment,” says Don Ƶ. “We’re not just getting bigger. We’re getting better.”

Looking Forward With Purpose

The print industry is moving quickly, and expectations continue to rise. Our customers need more flexibility, more efficiency and fewer obstacles. We welcome that challenge.

Part of our future includes thoughtful investment in technology like AI, robotics and automation. Under Tripp Ƶ’s leadership as Director of AI & Automation, we’re exploring tools that support our teams, reduce friction and free up time for the work that truly requires a human touch. These tools are not here to replace our team members. They are here to support their expertise and craftsmanship, and help us deliver an even better experience for our customers.

With an eye on the future, we don’t focus on just the next few quarters or years – we think generationally. And that long-term planning is embedded into every decision and every investment we make.

The Best Part of the Story Is Still Ahead

Eighty-nine years is a milestone worth honoring. It’s proof that the foundation is strong.

From the very beginning, when the first Don Ƶ started our company with nothing but a dream and a borrowed typewriter, and through every step of our journey, we are proud of where we’ve been. We are grateful for the people and customers who brought us here. And we are excited about what the future holds. Happy 89th Anniversary, Ƶ.

And if you’re wondering how a company can be nearly 100 years old and still feel like it’s just getting started, you probably haven’t spent much time around Ƶ. We invite you to get to know us.
